Luca Pacioli (c. 1447–1517) was an Italian mathematician and Franciscan friar renowned as the Father of Accounting for his foundational work in double-entry bookkeeping. Born in Borgo Sansepolcro, he authored Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria, Proportions et Proportionalita (1494), a comprehensive treatise that synthesizes arithmetic, algebra, and practical accounting.
In 1494, Pacioli published a foundational section on bookkeeping in his Summa, detailing the system of double-entry bookkeeping, including the use of debits and credits, ledgers, and the concept of trial balances. Although he did not invent the method, his meticulous description helped standardize practices used by merchants and businesses across Europe, cementing double-entry as the backbone of modern accounting.
